I attended a dinner and lecture last night about the Titanic, hosted by the author, Tim Maltin. Fascinating stuff.
Of course there's lots of detail to learn about the tragedy itself, such as that the vessel was far from full when it collided with the infamous iceberg so that there probably were enough lifeboats on board.
But what interested me most was that the sinking of the Titanic marked a transition to a new mechanised age from the Edwardian period. It was the first loss of life on an 'industrial' scale.
Apparently the film, 'A night to remember' (1958) is extremely accurate and worth watching as it was largely based on interviews with survivors. I shall have to watch it.
